5 Common Mistakes English Learners Make

Learning English is a journey, and making mistakes is a natural part of that journey. But some errors are so common that knowing about them can save you years of confusion.

1. Confusing "Make" and "Do"

Many learners use "make" and "do" interchangeably, but they have different uses. We "make" things that are created (make a cake, make a decision) and "do" activities or tasks (do homework, do exercise).

2. Forgetting the Third Person "S"

In present simple, the third person singular needs an "s": She works, he plays, it rains. This is one of the first rules we learn but one of the last we master.

3. Using "Much" and "Many" Incorrectly

"Much" goes with uncountable nouns (much water, much time), while "many" goes with countable nouns (many books, many people). A helpful trick: if you can count it, use "many".

4. Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

This is tricky because many languages don't make this distinction. Use past simple for finished time (Yesterday I went...) and present perfect for time connected to now (I have been... this week).
